I was very tired last summer and I should (take) a holiday, but there was too much work to do. 7. When he went for a walk he should (take) his umbrella, it looked like rain (but he didn’t). 8. The workmen are very slow; the job should (finish) a week ago. 9. You shouldn’t (eat) so much bread, now you’ve gained weight. 10. You shouldn’t (go) out yesterday without a coat. No wonder you caught a cold. 11. You should (cross) the road by the subway (but you didn’t). 12. He should (check) that his brakes were working properly (but he didn’t). 13. You should (warn) him that the ice was dangerous (but you didn’t). 14. Tom’s had another accident. It sounds like Tom’s fault. He should (wait) till the main road was clear.

Глагол need

 

Ø Модальный глагол need может употребляться как недостаточный и как правильный глагол.

You need not come. Тебе незачем приходить.

В сочетании с перфектным инфинитивом need показывает, что было совершено ненужное действие:

You needn’t have come. Зря вы пришли.

Модальный правильный глагол need имеет все формы, включая неличные. Инфинитив при нем употребляется с частицейto. Он выражает необходимость и по значению близок модальному глаголу to have to, но встречается реже, в основном в отрицательных и иногда в вопросительных предложениях.

I do not need to explain anything. Мне не нужно ничего объяснять.

Did you needtoread all these Тебе необходимо было читать

books? все эти книги?

 

Exercise 99. Paraphrase the following using the modal verb need.

Need you do the work instead of him?

1. It is not necessary to copy the composition. I can read it as it is. 2. It was not necessary for her to carry the bags all by herself: there were porters at the station. 3. Why do you want to buy a new bag? I could have lent you mine. 4. There is no use worrying about her; she is quite able to take care of herself. 5. What’s the use of reproaching yourself? 6. I don’t think there is any need to bother. 6. It was necessary for her to remind me about her birthday. I remember the date very well. 7. There is no need for you to be present. 8. Why did you mention all these figures? The situation was clear as it was. 9. Why do you want to do it all today? 10. It is not necessary to take the 8 pm train to London. A later one will do as well.

Exercise 100. Translate into English using the modal verb need.

1. Мне нужно тебе помогать? – Нет, спасибо, я всё сделаю сам. 2. Вы можете не ходить туда. 3. Ему незачем беспокоиться о ней. 4. Я могу и не спрашивать его: он сам мне всё расскажет. 5. Вам необязательно звонить мне: я не забуду о своём обещании. 6. Она может не ходить в библиотеку: я дам ей книгу. 7. Вы могли и не брать зонт: я уверен, что дождя не будет. 8. У нас много времени в запасе, и нам незачем спешить. 9. Тебе незачем делать это сейчас. Ты можешь это сделать и завтра. 10. Она может и не помогать. Всё уже сделано. 11. Вы могли и не кричать так на ребёнка. 12. Они теперь не могут спать. Им незачем было смотреть фильм ужасов.

Exercise 102. Translate into English using (don’t) have to, needn’t have.

1. Можете сегодня туда не ходить. Товар ещё не доставили. 2. Вам незачем идти на улицу: у соседей есть телефон. 3. У нас теперь построили стадион, и детям не придётся ездить далеко. 4. Им незачем ездить так далеко, можно заниматься в нашем читальном зале. 5. Можете не оставаться, если не хотите. 6. Не обязательно вам ходить самому. Можете прислать кого-нибудь. 7.
