NON-FINITE FORMS OF THE VERB

The Infinitive

Инфинитив (неопределенная форма глагола) представляет собой неличную глагольную форму, которая только называет действие, не указывая ни лица, ни числа. Инфинитив отвечает на вопросы что делать? что сделать?: to read, to write, to buy.

Формальным признаком инфинитива является частица to.

Частица to не ставится:

1) после модальных глаголов (can, may, must, need, could, might, should):

She can swim well. They should do it.

2) после глаголов to make (в значении «заставлять» в активном зало­ге), to let (разрешать):

She let them go.

3) после выражений had better (лучше бы):

You'd better sing us. A также would rather (предпочел бы): I would rather do it later.

Инфинитив может служить в предложении:

1. Подлежащим То skateis pleasant. Кататься на коньках приятно.
2. Именной частью сказуемого Your duty was to inform me about it immediately. Вашей обязанностью было сообщить мне об этом немедленно.
3. Частью составного глагольного сказуемого She began to translate the article. Она начала переводить статью.
4. Дополнением I asked him to helpme. Я попросил его помочь мне.
5. Определением He expressed a desire to helpme. Он выразил желание помочь мне.
6.Обстоятельством I went to the station to see off a friend. Я поехал на станцию проводить друга.

Инфинитив имеет формы времени и залога.

  Active Passive
Indefinite to ask to be asked
Continuous to be asking ----------
Perfect to have asked to have been asked
Perfect continuous to have been asking ----------

Инфинитив в форме Indefinite (как Active, так и Passive) употребляется, когда действие, которое он выражает:

Одновременное c действием, выраженным глаголом в личной форме I am glad to seeyou. Isaw him enterthe house.   Я рад вас видеть. Я видел, как он вошел в дом.  
Безотносительно ко времени его совершения: То skateis pleasant. Кататься на коньках приятно.

Инфинитив в форме Perfect (как Active, так и Passive) употребляется:

Для обозначения действия, предшествующего дейст­вию, выраженному глаголом в личной форме:

Не seems to have finishedhis work. - Он, кажется, закончил свою paботу.

This writer is said to have written а new novel. - Говорят, что этот писатель написал новый роман.

 

Ex. 1. Translate the sentences into Russian and state the functions of the infinitive.

 

1. Surely it is not at all necessary to go into details. 2. I rose to receive my guests. 3. Passing by a radio-shop he suddenly remembered to buy some tape for his recorder. 4. At the sight of the man I felt an impulse to laugh. 5. Her first action was to visit the establishment of a famous dressmaker. 6. He was too astonished to speak. 7. The best thing Lanny could do was to get out of here. 8. He was careful not to allude to the subject. 9. It's an awkward thing to say. 10. The horse was quiet to ride. 11. He must have been very tired to come and fall asleep like* that. 12. And suddenly he hated Crum. Who the devil was Crum, to say that?

Ex. 2. Combine each of the following parts of sentences into one sentence using an infinitive.

 

Model: They sent me to University, they wanted me to study law.

They sent me to University to study law.

 

1. I am buying bread. I want to feed the bird. 2. He opened the door. He intended to go out. 3. He rushed into the burning house. He wanted to save the child. 4. He rang the bell. He wanted to tell us that the dinner was ready. 5. The farmer shot the rifle. He wanted to frighten the birds. 6. He sent his children to his sister's house. He wanted them to watch the television programme. 7.1 am saving up. I want to buy a car. 8. I keep my hens in a field surrounded by wire netting. I want to protect them against the foxes.
