We use the present continuous tense to talk about the present:

ü for something that is happening at the moment of speaking:

I’m just leaving work. I’ll be home in an hour.
Please be quiet. The children are sleeping.

ü for something which is happening before and after a given time:

At eight o’clock we are usually havingbreakfast.
When I get home the children are doingtheir homework.

ü for something which we think is temporary:

Michael is at university. He’s studying history.
I’m working in London for the next two weeks.

ü for something which is newand contrastswith a previous state:

These days most people are usingemail instead of writing letters.
What sort of clothes are teenagers wearingnowadays? What sort of music are they listeningto?

ü to show that something is changing, growing or developing:

The children are growingquickly.
The climate is changingrapidly.
Your English is improving.

ü for something which happens again and again:

It’s always raining in London.
They are always arguing.
George is great. He’s always laughing.

Note: We normally use always with this use.

2. We use the present continuous tense to talk about the future:

for something which has been arrangedor planned:

Maryis goingto a new school next term.
What are you doingnext week?

3. We can use the present continuous to talk about the past:

When we are telling a story:

When we are summarising the story from a book, film or play etc.:

Present Simple or Present Continuous?

Exceptions
Exceptions when adding 's' : § For can, may, might, must, do not add s. Example: he can, she may, it must § After o, ch, sh or s, add es. Example: do - he does, wash - she washes § After a consonant, the final consonant ybecomes ie. (but: not after a vowel) Example: worry - he worries but: play - he plays Exceptions when adding 'ing' : § Silent e is dropped. (but: does not apply for -ee) Example: come - coming but: agree - agreeing § After a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is doubled. Example: sit - sitting § After a vowel, the final consonant l is doubled in British English (but not in American English). Example: travel - travelling (British English) but: traveling (American English) § Final ie becomes y. Example: lie - lying

Use

In general or right now?

Do you want to express that something happens in general or that something is happening right now?

Simple Present Present Progressive
in general (regularly, often, never) Colin plays football every Tuesday. present actions happening one after another First Colin plays football, then he watches TV. right now Look! Note: The following verbs are usually only used in Simple Present: be, have, hear, know, like, love, see, smell, think, want

Timetable / Schedule or arrangement?

Do you want to express that something is arranged for the near future? Or do you refer to a time set by a timetable or schedule?

Simple Present Present Progressive
action set by a timetable or schedule The film starts at 8 pm. arrangement for the near future I am going to the cinema tonight.

Daily routine or just for a limited period of time?

Do you want to talk about a daily routine? Or do you want to emphasis that something is only going on for a limited (rather short) period of time?

Simple Present Present Progressive
daily routine Bob works in a restaurant. only for a limited period of time (does not have to happen directly at the moment of speaking) Jenny is working in a restaurant this week.

Certain Verbs

The following verbs are usually only used in Simple Present (not in the progressive form).

§ state: be, cost, fit, mean, suit

Example: We are on holiday.

§ possession: belong, have

Example: Sam has a cat.

§ senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste, touch

Example: He feels the cold.

§ feelings: hate, hope, like, love, prefer, regret, want, wish

Example: Jane loves pizza.

§ brain work: believe, know, think, understand

Example: I believe you.

§ Introductory clauses for direct speech: answer, ask, reply, say

Example: “I am watching TV,“ he says.

Past Simple

 

Подчеркивает регулярность действия или единичный факт в прошлом. Past Simple правильных глаголов образуется путем прибавления к инфинитиву окончания – ed.

Формы неправильных глаголов приводятся в специальной таблице.

We discussed these questions last Friday.

He left school last year.

Вопросительная и отрицательная формы образуются с помощью вспомогательного глагола did.

Did you go abroad last year? No, I didn’t. I did not (didn’t) go abroad last year.

Past Simple употребляется для выражения обычных, постоянных или повторяющихся действий в прошлом и используется с обстоятельствами времени: yesterday, the day before yesterday, yesterday morning (evening, afternoon), last week (night, month, year), last time, five days (weeks, years) ago, in 1998.

I saw him yesterday morning.

We went to the country last week.

Для выражения повторяющихся действий в прошлом употребляется сочетание «used to», которое переводится словами обычно, бывало, раньше.

Last year we used to go to the theatre.

В прошлом году мы обычно (бывало) ходили в театр.

He used to be a doctor.

Он раньше был врачом.

Past Simple Tense

They always enjoyedvisiting their friends.

ü something that was true for some timein the past:

I livedabroad for ten years.
He enjoyedbeing a student.
She playeda lot of tennis when she was younger.

ü we often use phrases with ago with the past tense:

I met my wife a long time ago.
