Perspective

When you draw the floor in a room, how do you make it look like a floor, and not a wall? How do you show that something is far away or close? These questions are answered by the rules of perspective.

Perspective is the technique of getting an object to look correctly in place when drawn on paper.

A basic principle of perspective is that thing look large when close, and small when far away.

Objects close to you usually appear darker and more vivid than objects in the distance. Objects close to you will overlap whatever happens to be behind them. Objects that are far away from you usually appear higher up than objects close to you. Parallel lines appear to come together far away, at the horizon. For example, the top and the bottom lines of the building are actually parallel. This is apparent when you look at the building from directly in front. But when you see it from an angle, the lines seem to come closer together at the far end of the building. And if you extended these lines, they would seem to come together at the horizon.

Artists didn’t know the principals of perspective until the time of the Italian Renaissance. Drawings and paintings done before that time often tend to have a flat and somewhat strange look.

Today many artists intentionally ignore perspective. They feel they can best express feeling or mood and emotion by means of shapes and line and colors. They would rather do this than make a realistic picture using the principles of perspective.

A Lover of Music

A very young girl who was fond of playing the piano found out that among the guests who were invited to dinner would be a young critic whose name was Bernard Shaw. She had never met him before. At that time B. Shaw was not a famous writer yet. She learnt that he liked music and she decided to please him. It took her a lot of time to choose something very beautiful which the young critic might like. At last she made up her mind. She believed he would like it.

Almost all the guests arrived and the young girl was playing the piano when a young man entered the sitting-room. He greeted the host and the hostess and then he was introduced to all the guests as Bernard Show.

The girl looked at him with admiration. She continued to play the piano. B. Shaw did not pay attention to the young girl and started talking with one of the guests. The young girl felt embarrassed. She wanted to attract B. Shaw's attention. She didn't know how to do it. She turned round to him and said loudly: "Excuse me, I've heard that you are fond of music".

"I am", answered B. Shaw, "but never mind! Go on playing!"

Harmony in Design

Harmony is achieved through the sensitive balance of variety and unity. Colour harmony may be achieved using complementary or analogous colours. Harmony in design is similarity of components or objects looking like these belong together. Harmony is when some or many the components (usually three objects depending on size of project or room) such as furniture in a room share a common trait or two. A common trait could be: colour(s), shape(s), texture, pattern(s), material, theme, style, size, or functionality. For example a drapery could share the same color that is on a pillow or wallpaper. This is called colour coordination in wall paper design.

Harmony and unity generally make designs more visually appealing, organized and interesting. Is a technical and artificial process for attempting to produce interior design beauty? Design harmony may be used to produce a hidden or difficulty to see order or organization and sometimes balance in design, furniture and accessory selection, and furniture placement in most cases

A Mistake

Mark Twain was very fond of travelling. He did a lot of travelling and never got tired of it. Once he was travelling in France by train. He was going to visit a small town near Paris.

The previous day was very hard, Mark Twain was very tired and sleepy. He was afraid he would miss that town and asked the guard to wake him up before they got to the town.

Soon he fell asleep. When he woke up, the train was in Paris. Mark Twain looked at his watch. It was half past nine. He got very angry. He could not understand why the guard had not woken him up in time.

He went out of the compartment, came up to the guard and asked him why he had not woken him up. The latter looked at Mark Twain for a moment and then told him that he had done his best to keep his promise. When the train was approaching the town Mark Twain was going to visit, the guard woke up an American who did not want to get off the train in that small town. The guard was sure that the American was the very passenger who had asked him to wake him up. So, he put him off the train instead of Mark Twain. He finished the story with a sentence: "You may be very angry with me, but not so angry as the American whom I put off- the train instead of you".
