OUR MOTHERLAND

On December 12, 1991, the greatest country in the world – The Union of the Soviet Socialistic Republics has broken down. The 15 new independent states were formed of it: the Russian Federation, the republics of Belarus, the Ukraine, Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.

There are 9 federal districts (okrugs) in Russia (Central, Southern, North-Western, Far-Eastern, Siberian, North-Caucasian, Ural, Crimean and Volga), 3 cities of federal significance (Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol), 22 republics, 9 krays (Altay, Kamchatka, Krasnodar, Baikal, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Primorsk, Stavropol and Khabarovsk), 46 oblasts, 4 autonomous districts (okrugs) and 1 autonomous region (oblast).Moscow is the capital of our Motherland.

The area of the Russian Federation is the largest in the world. Its total territory is more than 17 mln. sq.km. Our country stretches from the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Black Sea in the south and the Baltic Sea in the west. The area of Russia lies both in European and Asian continents.

Russia has borders with many countries: Finland and Norway in the north-west; the Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States in the west; the Caucasian states in the south-west; Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China in the south; Japan in the South East and the USA in the east.

Russia has a various geographic relief. There are many plains, forests, mountains and grasslands on its territory. The Caucasus, the Altai and the Ural mountains are the longest mountain chains in our country. The Ural mountains also separate Europe from Asia.There are many rivers and lakes in our country too. The Volga (in the European part), the Ob, the Kama, the Lena and the Yenisei (in the Asian part) are the longest rivers of Russia. Lake Baikal in Siberia is the deepest and the clearest lake in the world. Many climate zones cover the territory of Russia. It is warm in the south, mild in the central part and very cold in the northern and eastern parts of our Motherland.

Russia has abundant natural resources. There are many deposits of natural minerals (diamonds), metals (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) coal, iron, oil and gas in our country (especially in Siberia and the Far East). Our soils are very fertile and their water-supply is perfect. We love our country and we are proud of its beauty!
