Название мероприятия: Конкурс знатоков

Тема: «Who knows more about the USA»

Цели и задачи:

  • развитие и повышение интереса к предмету;
  • повторение и закрепление ранее изученной лексики;
  • развитие навыков устной речи и аудирования;
  • развитие познавательных интересов учащихся;
  • обобщить знания учащихся о культуре страны изучаемого языка.

Оснащение:

  • компьютер;
  • мультимедийный проектор.

Ход мероприятия

Teacher: Good morning, boys and girls and our guests! I’m very glad to see you at our game!

Today we’ll have an unusual lesson –the competition “Who will be the best”. I want you to greet all of them with your applause!

Thank you, and now I want you to know more about our teams. Let introduce with our teams. The competition consists of several tasks. The 1st task is to answer the questions about the USA. If your answer is correct the team will get one point. If your answer is wrong the second team will be allowed to give the answer. After listening to the question the members of the team can consult with each other for 30 sec.

3. Who discovered America and when?

(Christopher Columbus, October, 1492).

4. What ship did Pilgrim Father sale to America in?

(“Mayflower”).

5. Why did the New World get name “America”?

(Columbus became the first explorer to reach the mainland of South America in 1498, but Amerigo Vespucci wrote a book in which he claimed to have gone there in 1497. That was not true, but people didn’t know for many years that Amerigo Vespucci was lying).

6. What are the first English settlers called who came to America in 1620?

(The Pilgrim Fathers).

7. What is the largest state in the USA? (Alaska).

8. How many stripes does the American flag have? (13).

9. How many stars are there on the American flag? (50).

10. What is the name of the American flag? (Stars and Stripes).

11. Who made the first American flag? (Betsy Ross).

12. What is the national emblem (symbol) of the USA? (The Bald Eagle).

13. Who is the head of state and government? (President).

14. What is the largest city in the USA? (New York).

15. What are the most popular sports in the USA? (Baseball, basketball, American football).

16. What university is the oldest one in the USA? (The Harvard University, 1636).

17 Who was the first President of the USA?

(George Washington was the first person to be elected the President of the United States. He was born in Virginia. He grew up to a large farm. He went to school for about eight years. He especially liked to study mathematics. He also liked to study history and geography, because he wanted to know about other parts of the world. He led the American army in many battles during the War for American Independence).

18. Who presented the Statue of Liberty to the people of America? (It was built in New York Harbor in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France).

19. When and whom was New York founded? (It was founded in 1613 by Dutch settlers. It was bought by a Dutchman Peter Minuit. He paid to Indians for Manhattan Island 24 dollars and a barrel of rum).

20. When do Americans celebrate Independence Day? (on the 4th of July the United States celebrate Independence Day. Because on 4th of July their founding fathers declared that the United States would be free and independent from England).

21. What is the capital of Georgia? (Atlanta is a capital (1868) of Georgia U.S. It lies in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just southeast of the Atlanta is Georgia's largest city. It is the home town of some famous companies, such as Coca-Cola, Delta Air Liners and CNN).

22. Whose words are: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” (Dr. Martin Luther King).

23. How many states are there in America? (50).

24. What was the first name of New York?

(The first name was New Amsterdam. It was renamed New York in 1626 by the English. The English took over the city and gave it another name after the Duke of York who was commander of the English Army).

25. Who is the president of the USA in our days? (Bush).

Teacher: The next task is to retell about places of interest. America is a very big country, which has a lot of different places of interest. It is a famous for its monuments, well known building and other sights. Your task is to explain the meaning of the word written on the card in English. Each team must take 3 cards.

  • The White House;
  • “the Pencil”;
  • Congress.
  • The Lincoln Memorial;
  • The Jefferson Memorial;
  • The Statue of Liberty.

Teacher: There are some difference between British English and American English. Write american equivalents of the words.

4. Форма внеклассного мероприятия (викторина, устный журнал и т.д.), целесообразность выбора данной формы.
