The Mediterranean red coral made famous by the artisans of Torre del Greco is now harvested only in limited amounts, as increasing areas are being preserved to protect the slow-growing coral. Most of the red and pink coral produced today comes from the East China Sea, then is shipped to Italy for processing.

The large pieces of red coral frequently seen as beads are referred to as "semiprecious" coral. Without the hardness of the exoskeleton, semiprecious corals, such as the aptly named "bamboo coral," require resin filling and dyeing to take on the color and polish of precious red coral.

Black coral is now so rare that it has special designations. It is listed for protection by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement among 175 countries to ensure the survival of wild plants and animals threatened by international trade. Red coral is not currently listed by CITES, but has been proposed for listing by the United States.

Unlike red coral, which has become depleted by its desirability as a gem material, the queen conch has been depleted by harvesting for food, and it was included on CITES' list after overfishing threatened populations. (See www. cites.org for the full list).

But, many shells are still abundant and available for jewelry use. Abalone shell, which is used in a semi-natural state or polished for use as mother-of-pearl, is produced by farms. Conch shells are now primarily imported from Caribbean, Madagascar, or East African waters.

Most bone and horn sold for jewelry use is legally produced from domesticated farm animals, and is readily available from reputable suppliers. Items made from wild animals may be restricted by local, state, federal, or international law. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends that consumers ensure coral or seashell are legal before buying them. Americans who travel abroad should check the laws of the country they are visiting as well as the laws of the U.S. before attempting to bring such items home.

Text 8 Essential tools

One of the pleasures of jewelry making is collecting the necessary tools. It can take years to acquire everything; good-quality tools are expensive. Some secondhand tools are a great value, but others are not worth considering because they are excessively marked or out of alignment. Avoid buying really cheap new tools. They are rarely worth even the small amount of money they cost because they are unlikely to last.

Measuring tools

Stainless Steel Ruler

A steel ruler usually comes with both imperial and metric measurements, and it is an invaluable tool.

Dividers

A pair of stainless steel dividers are used for many types of measurements. They can be used for making the same measurement many times, for example when marking wire for cutting pieces of equal lengths, measuring diameters and lengths accurately, drawing parallel lines on metal, and many other drawing applications.

Caliper

A caliper is a small sprung instrument that measures anything under 4 in (100 mm). The top "jaws" open out to the width of the piece being measured, and the reading is taken from .along the bottom.

Ring Mandrel

A ring mandrel is a tapered, usually aluminum, mandrel, used for measuring ring sizes, with intervals marked A–Z that correspond with the ring sizers. It should not be used as a former.
