Англичане не любят распространяться (to dwell on) на тему о своих доходах, особенно в присутствии посторонних, но Китти сделала для нас исключение, принимая во внимание то, что мы приехали из России и очень интересовались обычаями и особенностями английского образа жизни.
Оказалось, что семья Китти считается обычной для современной Англии. Ее муж Джон работает на крупном предприятии в восточном Лондоне. Он высококвалифицированный рабочий и получает неплохую зарплату. Китти не работает, она домохозяйка и к тому же ухаживает за малышом – своим восьмимесячным сыном и получает ежемесячное пособие по уходу за ребенком (maternity benefit1). Старший сын Китти учится в государственной школе, где получает бесплатное образование.
Кроме того, они с Джоном имеют небольшой годовой доход от нескольких акций «Элайд Кемиклз», которые им достались в наследство от родителей. Считается, что семья достаточно обеспечена, по крайней мере, по словам Китти, ей не нужно экономить каждую копейку (to pinch pennies).
Тем не менее, бюджет семьи строго рассчитан. Большая часть зарплаты Джона уходит на выплату налогов, страховок, а также платы за жилье. Поэтому она не возражает против распродаж и магазинов, предлагающих скидки, и делает покупки в обычных супермаркетах, не выходя за рамки бюджета. Это, однако, не означает, что семья живет, что называется, перебиваясь с хлеба на квас (to live from hand to mouth) и не может позволить себе праздника.
