Part 2.

Simple tense forms.

The present simple tense

1. Формы образования

  I, We, You, They,   read     news- papers     every day.

2. Случаи употребления:

a) The sun rises in the east.

Солнце встает на востоке (констатация факта).

b) We have four meals a day.

Мы едим четыре раза в день (обычно повторяющееся действие).

3. Cледующие обстоятельства обычно соответствуют данной временной форме:

every day (evening, morning) – каждый день (вечер, утро).

every week (month, year) – каждую неделю (месяц, год).

in the evening (morning, afternoon) – вечером (утром, днем).

Note 1: Наречия этого типа в предложении употребляются после подлежащего:

always – всегда

usually – обычно

often – часто

frequently – часто

never – никогда

seldom – редко

rarely – редко

sometimes – иногда

Note 2: В англ. предложении возможно только одно отрицание, поэтому наречие never употребляется с глаголом в утвердительной форме. He never watches TV in the morning. Он никогда не смотрит телевизор по утрам.

Make the following sentences- negative;

- interrogative.

1. I read books and listen to music every day.

2. Jony usually leaves home at 8 a.m.

3. It takes her half an hour to get to the University.

5. It is rarely cold in Great Britain.

6. The students of our group often miss classes.

7. We are good friends from childhood.

Exercise3.

Ask questions to the following sentences beginning with the word(s) in brackets.

Pattern: I have breakfast in the morning (what time / usually ?)

-What time do you usually have breakfast ?

1. Jim plays tennis (How often?).

2. We come to the University at the same time (Why?).

3. I often watch TV (When?).

4. My friend studies at the University (where?).

5. I am seldom free in the evening (Why?).

Exercise4.

Read the following sentences and correct them. Make up two correct sentences.

Pattern: The sun goes round the earth. –The sun does not go round the earth.

4. The sun rises in the west.

Exercise5.

Work in pairs

Pattern: Find out if your group-mate likes music.

-Do you like music? (You like music, don’t you?)

-Yes, I do and what about you?

-So do I / But I don’t.

Find out if your group-mate:

1. lives in hostel;

lives far from the University;

gets to the University by bus or on foot;

returns home late.

2. has a large family;

lives with his / her family;

spends much time with his / her family.

3. Find out the time of his / her getting up;

hawing breakfast;

leaving home;

coming to the university;

returning home.

 

 

Exercise6.

Use the Present Simple Tense instead of the infinitives in brackets.

Translate into English

1. Его родители живут в Москве и он навещает их каждый год.

2. В это время она всегда занимается, и родственники стараются не мешать ей.

3. Он всегда опаздывает. Наверное, он живёт далеко от института.

4. Мне требуются два с половиной часа, чтобы приготовится к урокам.

5. Почему ты редко к нам заходишь ?- Я сейчас очень занят.

6. Когда вы приходите домой ?- Обычно в 6 часов, иногда позже.

7. Гарри обычно уходит на роботу в 7 часов, так как его рабочий день начинается в 8.00.

8. Как вы обычно добираетесь до университета ?- Я езжу на троллейбусе.

9. Мы обедаем в институтской столовой.

10. У меня много книг, но я редко пользуюсь ими.

 

Exercise 8.

Speak about some modern actor / actress, musician, singer, politician, etc., without mentioning his / her name. Your group mates are to guess who the person is. If your group mates fail to guess correctly, they should ask you questions.
