Education in Great Britain is free and fee paying.

93 per cent of British children go to free state schools and7 per cent attend private schools.

Education is compulsory from 5 to 16 years.

Children start primary schools at 5 and continue until they are 11.

At 11 most children (84 per cent) go to secondary schools called comprehensives.

Others go to grammar schools (3 per cent) or secondary modern schools (6 per cent).

Grammar schools are the oldest schools.

Grammar schools prepare children for entering University.

At 16 pupils take a national exam called GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) - O level exams (ordinary level).

This is the end of compulsory education.

Pupils who want to enter a University, continue their studies in the 6^th form at school or at a sixth form college.

At the sixth form pupils take a national exam called A level (advanced level).

Universities and colleges accept students with A level form from 18.

Students study for a degree usually three years.

They graduate from the university at 21 or 22.

Private schools are called independent schools.

Some independent schools are called prep schools.

They prepare children for the Common Entrance Exam which they take at the age of 13.

Then they can enter the best public schools.

Public schools are boarding schools where children live and study.

The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow, Rugby, and Winchester.
