New spin on oscillation

Sakai used Conexpo-Con/Agg to introduce the SW652ND, a 58-inch-wide tandem roller with oscillation and vibration available on both drums. Sakai bills the new model as a double-drum oscillating roller that doubles as a vibratory roller. It is also the only roller in North America that can oscillate or vibrate both drums simultaneously. The 78-horsepower machine can work in vibratory mode at 4,020 vibrations per minute as a breakdown roller, or in the gentler oscillating mode as a finish roller, or to compact thin lifts and sensitive areas such as bridge decks.

Market-tailored recycler

Wirtgen has updated its WR 2000 stabilizer/recycler with features specifically for the North American market. The new WE 2000 XL has an 8-foot drum (replacing the previous 6-foot, 7-inch drum), and cuts up to 20-inches deep using its heavy-duty 20 mm cutter teeth. The new model also comes without a cab. All other features carry over, including the 422-horsepower engine.

Making the grade with accuracy

A new laser-based AccuGrade grading system for Caterpillar’s C-Series Skid-Steer Loaders, Multi-Terrain Loaders and Compact Track Loaders combines the capability of the Level Best Grading Box with the C-Series loader’s integral electro/hydraulic controls to create an automated grading system capable of extreme accuracy. The new system establishes flat or single-slope grades to within ± 0.25 inch (± 6.5 mm) without grade stakes, grade checkers and stake-setting surveyors. The system works with the loader’s auxiliary-hydraulic system and integral controls to automatically adjust the elevation of the grading-box blade, eliminating undercuts and overfills and assuring that expensive base materials are spread to exact specifications.

Improved work flow

Leica unveiled its new RedLine system at Conexpo-Con/Agg, touting the system as the world's most versatileconstruction sitepositioningrangesolution. Features include "Total GPS," which combines both Leica's Total Station and GNSS technologies to eliminate interruptions due to obstacles. RedLine also features dual positioning capabilities, which allow the system to provide precise bucket position in real time, even on moving platforms like barges or pontoons.

Instant material densityreadings

Trimble says its new CM310 Compaction Sensor gives a soil compactor operator real-time material density data. Introduced at Conexpo-Con/Agg, the new sensor allows operators to reach target density in fewer passes, and avoid over-compaction. It can also provide early detection of sub surface anomalies such as soft spots or hidden obstructions, says Trimble.

High-powered planers debut

Bomag has introduced two high-powered, half-lane cold planers. The 469-horsepower BM 2000/50 and the 590-horsepower BM 2000/60 both mill 79-inches wide and can mill as deep as 12.6 inches. They feature four-track steering, two working speeds, and an automatic depth-control system.
