Australia is big. It’s territory is 7,6 square kms. Only 5 countries in the world - Russia, Canada, the USA, China and Brazil are larger than Australia. The climate of it is hot and dry. It is difficult to grow anything, because two thirds of the country is a desert. The temperature in the desert is often 35 degrees above zero in the summer month and not many people live there. The northern part of the country is a popular place for winter holidays. On this side of the world December is in summer and June is in winter. In all of the country there are only 20 million people. Most of them live in the southern and eastern coast, where the summers are warm and the winters are not too cold. The first people in Australia were the Aborigines who came from South East Asia more than 40.000 years ago. In 1770 the British sailor Captain James Cook landed on the East coast and said that Australia now belonged to Britain.

THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It consists of four parts: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England, Wales and Scotland occupy the territory of Great Britain. Northern Ireland is situated in the northern part of Ireland. The territory of the United Kingdom is about 244,000 square kilometers; it takes the 75^th place among other countries in the world. The population is more than 57 million. About 80% of the population is urban. The capital of the country is London. Great Britain is separated from the continent by the English Channel which is 34 km wide in its narrowest point. The country is also washed by the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The surface of Great Britain varies greatly. The northern and western part of the country is mountainous and is called the Highlands. All the rest (south, east and centre) is a vast plain which is called the Lowlands. The mountains are not very high. The rivers are not long. The most important of them are the Severn, the Thames, the Trent. There are many beautiful lakes in the mountainous parts of the country.

Canada consists of almost all of the North American continent north except Alaska. Its total area is more than 9 mln square km and it is the second largest country in the world. The Canadian Shield covers half of the country. The northern Canada has an arctic climate, with long cold winters , lasting from 8 to 11 months and short sunny summers. The populated South has a moderate climate. Canada is a federation of 10 provinces and 2 territories. It has a population of over 30 mln people. About three quarters of population live in town and cities in the South. The largest cities are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa. The capital of Canada is Ottawa. You can see the symbol of Canada , the maple leaf, on its flag. English and French are the two official languages of Canada. The country is rich in mineral resources: gas, oil, coal, gold, copper, iron, nickel, wood and water. It is one of the world's leaders in mineral exports. Its soils make Canada one of the world 's largest exporters of agricultural products. It is the second in the world in the export of wheat. Forests cover about half of Canada and give home for many animals.
