MOSCOW - THE CAPITAL OF THE 1980 OLYMPICS.

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population numbers over 8 million. The history of the city is closely connected to that of the country as a whole. Moscow is the political, scientific and cultural centre of Russia.

The centre of Moscow is Red Square. Here the Kremlin is situated, whose red brick walls are crowned with towers famous throughout the world. The Kremlin was, is and will remain the heart of the city, the country and the people. Many monuments of the history and culture of the Russian people are located in the Kremlin.

Moscow was awarded the title of Hero City for the courage, heroism and steadfastness of its citizens during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

In the centre of the city we can see the Bolshoi and Maly theatres, major museums and picture galleries and old monuments. Moscow is growing constantly. Moscow today is the city of wide streets and large parks. One can get a good view of Moscow from the Lenin hills, where Moscow Lomonosov University is situated.

After Moscow was chosen as the site for the 1980 Olympics it received the right to call itself an Olympic city. Muscovites, with the help of the whole country have done everything necessary to give a fitting reception to the visitors from all over the globe. We have done everything to hold the Olympics on a high level. A number of the city’s large sport arenas have been remodeled in preparation for the games. Especially noteworthy among them is the Druzhba multipurpose gymnasium with seats for 3.000 spectators. The unique sports complex has been erected in Prospect Mira. It contains the largest indoor stadium in Europe and a swimming-pool. Much has been done on organizing transportation for athletes, officials, journalists, guests of the Olympics and tourists. LUDMILA TURISCHEVA

Turischeva's career in sport began in 1967, when the 15-year old girl from Grozny won the USSR Cup. The following year in Mexico she won the gold medal with the national women's gymnastics team. It was her first Olympic medal, the most coveted of all prizes. She was only 16, the youngest in the team.

After the Mexico Olympics fame came to the shy and serious girl but fame did not change her. At school or later at the Institute she never asked for any special priviliges. She continued to train as usual but with harder and greater determination. In 1970she won the title of the overall world champion and two years later won the Munich Olympic Games.
