SECONDARY MODERN SCHOOLS.

The newer and better accommodation is usually associated with the larger schools. There is a real gymnasium instead of a school hall; a workshop instead of, perhaps,a bench in the classroom corridor.

There will be a kitchen for cookery lessons, a laboratory, perhaps, a music room and a school orchestra.

Many kinds of specialist work can now be undertaken which were out of reach of the primary school. There will be a special geography room, a real library; perhaps there may be a language laboratory – at least there will be the excitement of starting to learn a foreign language.

These are indeed the kind of things to which boys and girls rightly look forward. How often are they forthcoming? The honest answer is that only seldom are secondary schools up to the required standards in all major aspects. But many modern schools are currently being absorbed into the comprehensive system. In recent years the standard of these schools has been raised considerably.

PLANNING THE CURRICULUM

Each Head of a school is responsible for the current scheme. He or she is guided by the general type of student, location of school, local circumstances, available staff and, of course, the age-range of pupils.

Advice as to curricula is readily given by Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools and the Local Education Authorities’ own specialist advisers.

Variations in conditions in schools, areas, children homes, make schemes very broad. But, of course, there must be some standard of achievement. The following scheme is only a broad outline of a school scheme and it does not lay claim to be either exhaustive or to cater for all types of schools.

                       The Primary School Curriculum

For many generations the curriculum in the primary school was confined almost exclusively to a drilling in reading, writing and arithmetic, the three subjects being commonly, if inaccurately, referred to as the Three R’s.

Today the curriculum has broadened.

The children have set periods of arithmetic, reading, and composition, which are all “eleven-plus subjects”. As they approach the examination, they may be given “practice” (not, of course, “coaching”) in doing intelligence tests. They will do other subjects too: geography, history, natural study, religious instruction, art (painting, drawing, clay modeling, etc.), music, singing, drama and poetry, physical education (out-door games, hygiene). These subjects are a means of developing the personality of the child and of awakening his interest in the world around.
