Activities

Many people go on holidays to rest and enjoy themselves. They lie on the beach and read books during the day, eat good food in restaurants in the evening. But today more and more people prefer activity holidays, i.e. doing sports or other things on holidays. One of the oldest kinds of activity is skiing. It is very popular with millions and millions of people. In the 1970s a new sport started in the ski resorts – snowboarding. There are special activity holidays for a lot of different sports, like scuba-diving, sailing, waterskiing, surfing, wind-surfing, hang gliding, sand skiing, sand boarding, walking, parachuting, base jumping, bunjee jumping, etc. Some people want adventure, that is why companies take groups of people to the Himalayas to go climbing, or mountain-biking. Some agencies take people rafting – to travel down fast rivers in special boats. Some non-profit organizations arrange for adventure on land, sea, air, or a contact on a cruise ship, or childcare jobs, or fruit picking, or a barmaid/man jobs. Some offer seasonal work, e.g. of a ski instructor, ski tour operator, ski technician, office worker, courier, door-to-door salesperson, or catering, baby sitting, etc.

Don’t Go on Holiday with your Best Friend.

Sometime even yourfriend can turn your holiday into a nightmare. It was August and Kate went with a friend to one of the quieter island in the Adrian sea for a fortnight. It was sun-sea-and-sand holiday and they were staying in a small apartment. On the first day she'd realized she had made a great mistake. It was a very hot summer which suited Ann fine. She's dark-skinned, so she just covered herself in oil and lay in the sunall day long. If Kate did that, she'd be in hospital with a sunstroke. In three days she got really a bad heat rash. She was hot, uncomfortable and bored out of her mind. She'd sit all day long in one of the local cafes reading. In the evening, when Ann and Kate went out for a meal. Kate would sulk because she felt Ann was being selfish and wasn’t considering what she wanted to do on the holiday. By 9 o’clock Ann and Kate would be barely talking, and Ann was also exhausted by frying herself the whole day and would want to go to bed. That made Kate even more bad-tempered. Kate and Ann are still friends but they would never, never ever go on holiday together again.

1. Read and think and talk about:

a. Who do you identify with Kate or Ann?

b. Would you be upset if you were in Kate's shoes?

c. Do you think Ann was selfish?

d. Does it mean that just because someone is a good friend he or she will automatically make a good companion?

e. Who do you think makes the best holiday companion and why?

Hotels

Hotel is a building when you pay to stay and eat.

Hotels are given "stars" to show their quality. The six/five-star hotels are the very best hotels. A four-star hotel has two restaurants and a swimming pool.

1. What should a hotel have to get stars?

"Book" (esp. British)," make a reservation" (esp. American). If you book a flight, a room, etc., you arrange to travel on a plane, stay in a hotel, etc. at a particular time in the future (e. g. Have you booked your flight yet? I've made a reservation at the Holiday Inn.).

2. Describe how you usually book a hotel or a flight.
