Task VII: develop the topic, give the portrait of a teacher/make up your own text based on your own ideas.

А SURVEY OF STUDENTS

This survey included over 40 students of English of intermediate to advanced level. The context of the survey was а large, mixed-Level class with little access to expensive equipment. The survey took the form of interviews al1d written assignments in which the students were asked to recall their favorite and least favorite teachers and to say why they thought certain teachers were more successful than others. This is а summary of their statements-both good and bad. The list is long and the qualities are listed in nо particular order. There were many contradictory qualities that contribute to good language teaching. What do you think of the student's responses? Which seem most correct and which seem strange? What do you think your students would say in such а survey?

Task:Consider these statements made by language teachers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with their points of view? Why? Draw on your personal experience as a language teacher when answering.

"I never get students to work together in groups. It's a waste of time and they don't speak English when in the group."

"I don't use a tape or a tape recorder. The students don't understand most of the time, and when they do understand, they aren't doing anything."

"I think you should always correct mistakes immediately. Otherwise, how can they learn what good English is?"

"I would love to teach them to speak English, but as they have a written examination, I focus mostly on grammar and composition."

Task:Teachers were asked to create metaphors for the second-language classroom. They were asked to draw on all of their experience in classrooms, as well as their visions of "ideal" classroom." Here are some of there responses. With which would you agree with would you disagree? What metaphors would you add to the list? Why?
