He frowned.

“What’s the trouble? Money? Well I know your pension won’t be so much really, but you could get an easier, fresh-air job later on, and — man, that’s surely better than what’s coming to you if you go on being so foolish.”

Mellers knew only too well. There had been his father. Oh, his father — .

Always he would remember the impressions of a child who knew that some terrible catastrophe had fallen on his home, but could not properly realize it. There were still the memories of moments from that year when his father had lain dying in the old armchair in the kitchen. One of them was particularly terrible. He remembered passing his father’s chair when the sick man suddenly caught him by the arm and drew him close to the thin-lipped, bluish pale face.

“You’ll never be a miner!” he whispered. “Hear me? They’ll never use up your body and throw it away as good for nothing. Promise me now, you’ll never be a miner!”

And the frightened boy had promised again and again till at last he had succeeded in breaking away from the big hairy man and had run to bury his face in his sad silent mother’s hands.

He had promised. But a widow’s son must work and in the village there was only the mine. So he had become what his father had been, and had known the pride and the pain, the achievements and the difficulties, the growing strength and the disappointment of a miner’s life.

He had stood it all and now they said, “Give it up...”

“It’s not just money. Anyhow, I’ll think about it,” came his answer at last.

The doctor looked at Mellers and imagined the fine fellow he must have been in younger days. But he looked older than fifty-two, though. Very much older.

“Might I ask you how long you’ve been a miner, Mr. Mellers?”

Mellers pursed his lips again and looked upwards at the ceiling.

“Eh-h-thirty-seven — thirty-eight years, now, I think. Right since I was fourteen.” He was obviously very proud of it.

“Well, it’s time to give it up,” the doctor insisted. “It would be a shame to finish nearly forty years of hard work by dying before your time, wouldn’t it?”

Dying before his time... But what would his life be without the job, without the mine?

There were his fellow-workers too. Whatever else they shared together, their companionship was founded on the fact that they belonged to a special class: miners. If he changed this, then his life would no longer run parallel to theirs and none of their other interests could outweigh the fact that he was no longer one of them. Yes and even at home — unquestionably — his relations with his wife and family would change.

No, he could be no other than this — not for life itself. The mine had a right to him and therefore, if he died for it, he must remain a man of the mine...

Mellers stood up.

“Well thank you, doctor.”

“Come next Monday,” the doctor said.

“All right.”

The door closed. For a moment or two the doctor sat staring at its blank face. Then he turned his head slowly to look around his surgery. He looked at the shining leather and the polished wood, at the glass and the brass and the gleaming metallic tools of his trade.

“Thirty-eight years,” he said to himself as if not really believing it. He wrote the number on a piece of paper and studied it. He wished he could do something for the miner. But Mellers’ case wasn’t an unusual one: there were plenty more like him. The degree of illness varied, but the handling of them was always so difficult.

He drew a ring around the thirty-eight and stared hard at it, trying to get some meaning out of it. But it was just a piece of paper with some marks, when all was said and done.

Well — Mellers was only one patient and the rounds were waiting to be done.

He picked up the paper, threw it into the waste-basket and decided to try to forget it for the present.
