The chairman declared the meeting open. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “The editorial in The World declared that only Communists would turn up at this meeting. Let us judge for ourselves. We who are here tonight are not reds, whites, blacks or greens. We are ordinary people. Our purpose here is to defend our rights.” The chairman felt very nervous during that opening speech for this was the first time in his life that he had had to take the chair. The first speaker did not impress the audience and the resolution proposed after his rather stiff speech was adopted without any discussion or amendments. Then a beautiful middle-aged woman took the floor. She spoke without notes. She spoke of what was happening in the University today. “They demand that we should subscribe to a campaign that will throw this country2 into the hell of an atomic war. We give first ten per cent, and then twenty, and soon fifty per cent of our minds... to war. We have secret laboratories where atomic experiments are being carried out...” Pa looked at the speaker, but he couldn’t hear what she was saying. His thoughts went far away to Ma Dunn. Ma had never looked like that. This woman was slim like a young girl, and she must be well past forty. She walked like a woman in the movies. What was wrong with him, and all the other men he knew, that He hadn’t been able to give Ma all the things that would have kept her beautiful, like this woman? A feeling of terrible guilt pressed on his shoulders. He lowered his eyes to the seat and tried again to listen. “Couldn’t she have mentioned Patty?” A storm of applause followed the woman’s speech. Seeing an expression of disappointment on Pa Dunn’s face, his neighbour leaned over and Pa said: “All right. But she didn’t mention everybody. She left some of them out.” “Who3 do you mean?” “Well, take... Patricia Dunn.” “You know her?“ the man whispered. Pa hesitated. His hands were trembling. In excitement he said: “She’s my daughter. They wouldn’t even let me see her. She’s in prison right now! And her mother’s ill.” The man looked at him curiously. “Get up and ask. You’ve got to ask him! Ask him now!” he encouraged Pa Dunn in rather a loud voice. This must have attracted the chairman’s attention. Pa saw the chairman waving for silence and pointing, pointing straight to him. “Floor open for discussion and questions! This gentleman has the floor!” Pa couldn’t hear his own words. He was trembling inside. Before he realized what he was doing, he was on his feet, and endless rows of faces were staring at him. “My daughter is arrested,” he began stumbling, “and they wouldn’t let me see her. They wouldn’t...” All of a sudden the fright was gone, as he looked down at his hands. “Patty’s got hands like mine. She works at the plant the way I did all my life... I couldn’t sleep when I read in the papers how they said she was a Communist. But now, I don’t care. I’m proud of her. She may be a Communist, but Patty can’t be a spy. Anybody who says that is a liar! I say if Patty’s a Communist it’s because... because she thought she could help more that way. But we can’t pick out which one is a Communist or not, we’ve got to help them all!” Pa Dunn was about to go back to his seat, when a new thought came to him, and the strength of this thought made him address the audience again. “Friends!” he said, waving his arms for silence. “I’ve got another thing to say. I want to ask you... why is it they always say it’s the Soviets that people are spying for? I’ll tell you why. It’s because they know the Soviets stand for us. “I’m an old man. I don’t care. I’m just saying what you all know. I was in the 1919 strike. I was one of those who stood up right here in this theatre and voted to send a cable over to the Soviets, telling them we strikers were on their side. They called us spies then, friends. Oh, yes, they did. Spies! Some believed it, and they broke the strike. And a long time after along comes Hitler and the war4. When the Soviet soldiers were dying instead of our boys, nobody said anything about spies! Even the boss, Farnoy, had himself in a picture shaking hands with a Soviet man. Nobody called Farnoy a red spy.” At the outburst of laughter, Pa Dunn continued, “Bosses like Farnoy use this spy talk to prove the Soviets want to fight us. But it’s the bosses who want to make us go and fight the Soviets! Think a little about that, and you’ll see through all this spy stuff!” ...Pa went back to his seat through the clapping. He was shaking like a leaf. “Ma will never believe it,” he said to himself. “Old Mrs. Craig is here, maybe she’ll tell Ma tomorrow.” NOTES ON THE TEXT 1.
