Studying Languages Can Grow the Brain

Learning a new language can grow one’s perspective. Now scientists find that learning languages grows parts of the brain.

Scientists studied the brains of students in the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, who are required to learn new languages at an alarmingly fast rate. Many must become fluent in Arabic, Russian and the Persian dialect Dari in just 13 months. The researchers compared the brains of these students to the brains of medical students who also have to learn a tremendous amount in a very shortperiod of time, but without the focus on languages.

The brains of the language learners exhibited significant new growth in the hippocampus and in parts of the cerebral cortex. The medical students’ brains showed no observed growth. The study was in the journal NeuroImage.

Interestingly, the amount of growth in the brains of the linguists correlated with better skills – so those with better language skills also experienced more growth in the hippocampus and areas of the cerebral cortex that relate to language. For other students who had to work harderto improve their language skills, the scientists found greater growth in the motor area of the cerebral cortex. Where and how much change takes place in the brain is linked to how easily one picks up a language. But it remains to be seen why this is.

СЛУЧАИ ОТСТУПЛЕНИЯ ОТ ПРЯМОГО ПОРЯДКА СЛОВ

В АНГЛИЙСКОМ ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИИ

Изменение порядка слов (без использования дополнительных элементов) называется инверсией, при которой выделяемое слово выносится в начало предложения без нарушения при этом грамматических связей между словами.

При инверсии в начало предложения выносится дополнение, сказуемое, смысловая часть сказуемого, обстоятельство (табл. 3).

Особенности перевода на русский язык:

1. В случае вынесения дополнения в начало предложения при переводе рекомендуется сохранить порядок слов, добавив усиливающее слово «именно», например:

This mistake we observed in all his works.

Именно эту ошибку мы наблюдали во всех его работах.

2. В случае вынесения сказуемого в начало предложения при переводе также рекомендуется сохранить порядок слов, например:

In the vacuum wasa new sample.

В вакууме находился новый образец.

3. В случае вынесения смысловой части сказуемого в начало предложения перевод следует начинать с обстоятельства (если оно есть), а смысловую часть сказуемого перенести к глаголу be, например:

Important in this case is statistics.

В данном случае большое значение имеют статистические данные.

4. В случае инверсии, вызванной наречиями и союзными словами (only, never, rarely, nowhere, not only … but, hardly … when, neither …nor) рекомендуется сохранить порядок слов, например:

Never does it lead to considerable changes. Это никогда не приводит к значительным изменениям. We could not identify the sample. Neither could we make the experiment once more. Мы не смогли определить образец. А также мы не смогли провести эксперимент еще раз.
