[ ] – переднеязычные апикально-межзубные щелевые фрикативные согласные. При произнесении этих согласных язык не напряжен, кончик языка находится между зубами. Зубы обнажены, струя воздуха проходит между языком и верхними зубами. [ ] – глухой согласный, [ ]-звонкий согласный. Когда вы произносите

B.: Certainly, madam. But we don’t take anything out of the window until three o’clock on Thursday.

J.: I told Tom about your crumpets, Mum. That’s why he’s coming for tea tomorrow!

 

3. Intonation.

Mm has a lot of meanings. Practise these:

RISE: What did you say? FALL: Yes. FALL-RISE: How nice!

Listen to the conversation and repeat:

A.: Would you like some home-made crumpets?

B.: Mm?

A.: Would you like some crumpets?

B.: Mm.

A.: Here you are.

B.: (eating) Mm!

A.: I’m glad you like them. I made them myself. Would you like to try them with marmalade?

Unit 44. NOSE

A.: Is it furnished?

B.: No. It’s unfurnished. The kitchen has no oven. It’s forbidden to use the garden. No friends in the apartment after eleven in the evening. No noise and no television after 11.15. No…

A.: No thank you! I want an apartment, not a prison!

Unit 45. RING

[ ] – заднеязычный смычный носовой сонант. При его произнесении задняя часть языка касается мягкого неба. Кончик языка не поднимается к альвеолам, а находится у основания нижних зубов.

Тренируя слова контрастно, контролируйте разное место образования носовых звуков [n] и [ ]. При произнесении [n] осязательно контролируйте, что кончик языка находится на альвеолах. При произнесении [ ] откройте широко рот и опустите нижнюю челюсть (при широком растворе рта физически невозможно поставить кончик языка на верхние альвеолы). Произносите оба звука в конечном положении протяжно. При соединении [ ] с последующей гласной избегайте резкого перехода. Следите за тем, чтобы не появлялись дополнительные звуки [k] и [g].

B.: She’s bringing something pink for Mr. King to drink. Now she’s putting it under the ladder, and . Oh!

A.: What’s happening?

B.: The ladder’s falling.

A.: What’s Mr. King doing?

B.: He’s hanging from the string. He’s holding the string in his fingers and he’s shouting to Mrs. King.

A.: And is she helping him?

B.: No. She’s running to our house. Now she’s ringing our bell.

A.: I’m not going to answer it. I’m sleeping.

Unit 46. LETTER (part 1)

 

[1] – переднеязычный апикально-альвеолярный боковой сонант. Кончик языка прижат к альвеолам, боковые края опущены, образуя проход для воздуха. Темный (твердый) оттенок l звучит в конце слов и перед согласными. Светлый (палатализованный) оттенок [1] звучит перед гласными и согласным [j].

The letter r is silent in this words. When there is no vowel following it, r is silent.

C.: Where’s the bar?

B.: It’s upstairs. There’s a bookshop too. And a supermarket. This is a marvelous airport!

C.: Oh dear! I wanted to get to New York earlier. Ah! Here’s an air hostess. Excuse me. I don’t understand. Has there been an emergency?

A.: Oh, no, sir. There’s just a storm and the weather forecast says it will get worse. So the plane will leave a little later this afternoon.

B.: Are you sure?

A.: Oh, yes, sir. Our departure time is at 4. 44.
