The Days of the Week

It’s interesting to know how the days of the week came to have such names.

These names are very old, for they were chosen long, long ago, in the days when people worshipped a different god each day.

Sunday was the Sun’s day and the next day was the Moon’s day or Monday. Tuesday was called after Tiu, the god of war. Wednesday was Woden’s day, the hightest god of the Teutonic peoples. Thor was the thunder god, his day was called Thor’s day or Thursday. Woden’s wife insisted on having a special day of her own. Her name was Freya, so her day came to be called Friday. Saturn was the Roman god of the fields; his day was Saturn’s day or Saturday.

Note: Tiu [ti:u:], Woden [woudn], Thor [oo:], Freya [freie], Saturn [s ten]

Answer the questions.

1.When were the names of the days chosen? 2. How were the names for the days chosen? 3. What is the origin of the name given to Sunday? (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday)? 4. Which day was called after the god of war? 5. Which day was called after Woden’s wife? 6. What was her name?
